The Mau Mau Memorial Monument in Uhuru Park, Nairobi, honours Kenyans who suffered torture and ill-treatment during the colonial-era State of Emergency (1952–1960). Over the years, weathering and heavy public use had cracked and lifted much of the granite and slate tiling and left the plinths, seating and access ramp in need of repair.

TEKEEY is carrying out the renovation — stripping out and replacing the failed paving, re-cladding the curved feature walls in banded granite tile, repairing the damaged plinths and the wheelchair ramp, and wrapping and cleaning the bronze sculpture group so it stays protected while the surrounding works go on.

The Works

What the renovation involves

Condition survey
Walked the whole monument to record every cracked slab, lifted tile, corroded fixing and damaged plinth before pricing the works.

Strip-out
Broke out and cleared the failed floor and paving tiles across the plaza and walkways down to a sound base.

Sculpture protection
Wrapped the bronze sculpture group so it stayed protected from dust and impact while masonry and tiling work went on around it.

Feature walls & plinths
Re-clad the curved feature walls and the memorial plinths in banded granite tile, keeping the original grey, red and black arrangement.
5
Re-paving
Laid new plaza and walkway paving to proper falls, with consistent joints and clean edging against the grass.
6
Ramp & finishing
Repairing the access ramp and handrails, cleaning the sculpture and plaques, and clearing the site as the works are completed.
